Male Hair Loss Explained
MALE PATTERN BALDNESS (MPB) or ANDROGENIC ALOPECIA.
Male Pattern baldness is the cause of hair loss in men in over 90% of cases. MPB is defined as hair loss at the front, top and/or the crown/vertex of the scalp (non-permanent area). The back and sides of the scalp are spared and usually grow hair for life (permanent area).
Hair loss is men can be one of the most stressful and anxiety provoking of life’s events. A receding hairline or the appearance of a bald patch can have a dramatic effect on a man’s self confidence. For some men the process of hair loss can start as early as the late teens for others it starts in the 20’s or 30’s. For some men the process of hair loss is of no apparent concern but to others it can lead to emotional distress.
Hair loss in men is known as ’ANDROGENIC ALOPECIA’ or ’MALE PATTERN BALDNESS’ and tends to be inherited this is caused by the effect of male hormones on genetically predisposed hair follicles.
The male hormone Testosterone is converted to ’Dihydrotestosterone (DHT) by an enzyme called 5-alpha reductase. DHT inhibits the growth of new hair cells, which leads to hair loss and baldness.
There are other causes of hair loss including:
Iron deficiency anaemia.
Under active thyroid.
Fungal scalp infection.
Some prescribed medicines.
Stress and anxiety.
The above causes are usually reversible.
Most men, like you, would prefer to keep as much hair as possible. But unfortunately, desire alone does not keep hair from falling out. Your male pattern hair loss will most likely continue, and the bald spot on your crown will most likely continue to expand.
Treating male pattern hair loss.
Because male pattern hair loss can be a progressive condition, the sooner you do something about it, the better chance you have to retain what hair you have and possibly regrow some of the hair you’ve lost.
